The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is seeking a new Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO) after the departure of Jerry Ma earlier this year in May.

Ma, who joined USPTO in 2020, announced his departure from office through a LinkedIn post. “The USPTO is now hiring for its second-ever Chief AI Officer, and there exists no better agency for a civic-minded AI leader to jump in and start delivering. You will work at the crossroads of technology, policy, and public-sector innovation to support our nation in ensuring American leadership in AI for years and decades to come,” Ma wrote in a recent LinkedIn post.

In a new job posting on usajob.com, USTO said it is looking for a new CAIO to advance the shared understanding of how to best implement the opportunities presented by AI/ML.

“The CAIO is the principal advisor to the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and the Deputy CIO on operationalizing AI and ML with a focus on business value delivery to the agency,” the job posting reads.

Responsibilities include advising CIO and DCIO on innovation, governance, and risk, translating business priorities into actionable AI roadmaps, guide implementation with OCIO teams, and drive adoption through measurable quick wins. The new CAIO will also be expected to collaborate with DevSecOps to build scalable, resilient platforms supporting mission-critical operations.
