The White House is considering an executive order that would require advanced artificial intelligence models to undergo safety evaluations before being released publicly, according to National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, MeriTalk reported.
Speaking on Fox Business, Hassett compared the potential framework to the approval process for pharmaceutical drugs, saying AI models should be proven safe before being released.
“We’re studying, possibly an executive order, to give a clear roadmap to everybody about how this is going to go and how future AIs that also potentially create vulnerabilities should go through a process so that they’re released in the wild after they’ve been proven safe, just like an FDA drug,” he said.
He added that the administration is currently focused on reviewing Mythos, with National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross coordinating with Anthropic on extensive testing measures.
The move signals a potential shift in the Trump administration’s stance on AI after earlier tensions with Anthropic over restrictions on Pentagon use of its models. Despite previous disputes, President Donald Trump recently said the administration has been in talks with the company and “get along with them.”
