The U.S. Department of Labor has announced a major national initiative to integrate artificial intelligence skills into Registered Apprenticeship programs, signaling a significant step toward preparing the workforce for future jobs.
Led by the department’s Employment and Training Administration, the effort aims to expand AI training, modernize apprenticeship models, and strengthen talent pipelines across critical and emerging industries.
The initiative will focus on embedding AI curricula into existing programs, incorporating AI into relevant job roles, and supporting workforce development in sectors such as data centers, telecommunications, and advanced manufacturing.
“AI is transforming every industry, and our workforce systems must evolve just as quickly. This initiative will help ensure American workers are not merely participants in the AI economy but leading it,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer.
The department plans to appoint a national intermediary to help develop AI-focused training, support employers, and align workforce strategies across industries.
“Registered Apprenticeships remain one of the nation’s most effective workforce development models, offering earn-while-you-learn opportunities that connect workers directly to good-paying jobs,” said Keith Sonderling, Deputy Secretary of Labor.
