The U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has announced the launch of a Secret/Restricted Data (S/RD) Enterprise Cloud environment developed with Amazon Web Services (AWS).
The new cloud environment is designed to connect NNSA’s geographically dispersed laboratories, plants, and sites into a unified and secure digital ecosystem, enabling real-time collaboration, advanced computing, and streamlined access to shared tools.
“A modern, flexible nuclear enterprise needs seamless integration to build and deliver at the pace the global environment demands. Our collaboration with AWS in the establishment of an S/RD enterprise environment will connect our labs, plants, and sites, support real-time collaboration with common tools, and provide access to advanced digital collaboration and computing capabilities. This example of public-private partnership in service to national security is what makes America exceptional,” NNSA Administrator Brandon Williams said in a statement.
The S/RD Enterprise Cloud is the first cloud environment to receive enterprise authorization for processing Secret/Restricted Data. It will support critical activities such as product development, digital engineering, advanced modeling and simulation, and secure data analytics.
“AWS has powered NNSA’s cloud transformation from day one; advancing America’s technological superiority when it matters most. Our purpose-built government cloud infrastructure ensures that the scientists and engineers safeguarding our national security have the most advanced, secure computing foundation in the world today,” said David Appel, AWS VP, Global Government, National Security, and Defense.
The initiative also advances the Administration’s broader national security modernization goals and will support the Genesis Mission, a government-led effort launched in 2025 to accelerate the use of artificial intelligence to advance scientific discovery and national challenges.
