The U.S. Marine Corps will host an “AI Learning Initiatives Hackathon” from September 15-18 to develop artificial intelligence tools to improve military education, training, and administrative functions.

Organized by Marine Corps University and the Naval Postgraduate School, the event will bring together Marines, personnel from other military services, government civilians, academics, and industry experts.

Participants will work in teams to create software prototypes and explore AI applications across several areas, including personalized learning, virtual training and simulations, performance assessments, content generation, administrative processes, data analysis, and wargaming. The initiative is designed to accelerate innovation while strengthening AI literacy across the defense education community.

The hackathon aligns with the Marine Corps’ broader AI implementation strategy, released in 2025, which identified building an “AI-competent workforce” as a key priority. Recent efforts have included mandating a Basic AI Course for Marines and adopting the Pentagon-backed GenAI.mil platform.

Applications for the hackathon close on Aug. 14. Winning prototypes will be evaluated for their potential to be securely deployed and scaled across Marine Corps operations.
