Federal agencies reported 3,611 artificial intelligence use cases across 56 agencies in 2025. This is more than double from the 2,133 use cases reported by 41 agencies in 2024, according to new data from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) reported 447 use cases, which is the highest among the federal agencies. Around 255 of them have been deployed and piloted in 2025.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) reported 425 use cases, followed by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) with 367.
So far, more than 1,800 AI systems have been deployed or are in pilot stages, signaling a shift from experimentation to operational use.
Common applications include document processing, predictive analytics, chatbots and cybersecurity monitoring, alongside emerging use cases in healthcare analytics and satellite data processing.
The growth aligns with updated federal guidance encouraging wider AI adoption while strengthening oversight and governance for high-impact systems.
