The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has significantly expanded its use of artificial intelligence, adding dozens of new applications over the past year that increasingly support core law enforcement activities, according to the Department of Justice’s 2025 AI inventory, the Fedscoop reported.
The inventory shows the bureau now operates 50 AI use cases, up from 19 the year before, with 27 tied directly to law enforcement functions. Many of the new deployments focus on biometric identification, facial recognition, data synthesis, and investigative triage, signaling a deeper integration of AI into day-to-day operations.
Among the most prominent additions are AI systems designed to generate investigative leads by suggesting facial matches and correlating biometric data with other information sources.
The FBI launched roughly five new projects aimed at expanding biometric capabilities, four of which are already actively used in investigations.
Other use cases support pattern detection, data outlier identification, and automated analysis of large volumes of criminal and administrative records.
