The Department of Energy (DOE) expects two internally developed artificial intelligence platforms, Joulix and Quanta, to generate approximately $74 million in annual operational savings, according to DOE’s deputy chief information officer Bridget Carper Arnone.

“Right now, we’re looking at $74 million in annual operational savings by leveraging the two tools, Joulix and Quanta, and that’s just two. With our use case inventory, there’s a lot more,” Carper Arnone said while speaking at GovExec’s Government Efficiency Summit in Washington, D.C.

Joulix, DOE’s enterprise generative AI platform, evolved from the department’s EnerGPT chatbot launched in 2024. The platform now serves more than 21,000 users across DOE’s 88 organizational elements, including its national laboratories. Beyond conversational AI, Joulix offers specialized applications for human resources, procurement, executive order compliance, and policy review.

According to Carper Arnone, AI-powered procurement tools have significantly reduced the time required to review and summarize lengthy contract proposals, helping the department accelerate acquisition timelines.

To address growing demand for large-scale data analysis, DOE also developed Quanta, a data platform built on Databricks that organizes structured and unstructured data before applying AI models. The platform enables users to rapidly search and analyze massive datasets, dramatically reducing the time required for complex information retrieval tasks.

Quanta’s adoption has surged by nearly 4,900% over the past eight months and is now deployed across 44 DOE offices. The department plans to expand the platform to all 88 organizational elements by the end of the fiscal year as it continues to scale AI-driven productivity and mission support capabilities.
