Rob Thompson, Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and NHS England Chief Digital, Data and Technology Officer
The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and NHS England have appointed Rob Thompson as Chief Digital, Data and Technology Officer, according to Digital Health.
Thompson joins from the Home Office, where he served in the same capacity and was part of its leadership team for nearly eight years. In his new role, he will assume responsibilities from Jules Hunt, who has been serving as interim Director General for Technology, Digital and Data since last year.
“It is a privilege to join the DHSC and NHSE leadership team at such an important time. Digital, data and technology are central to delivering the government’s 10 year health plan and ensuring the health and care system provides the best possible care for the people we serve,” Thompson said.
Before his tenure at the Home Office, Thompson held roles across several large organizations, including the Department for Work and Pensions, Deutsche Telecom UK, AT&T, and BT.
Jim Mackey, Chief Executive of NHS England, noted that Thompson’s leadership will be critical in advancing digital and data capabilities to improve services and support healthcare staff. He also acknowledged Hunt’s contributions during the interim period.
Samantha Jones, Permanent Secretary at DHSC, welcomed the appointment, highlighting Thompson’s experience and the role he will play in advancing transformation efforts to improve outcomes for patients and the public.
Thompson’s start date will be confirmed in due course, with a transition period planned with Hunt to ensure continuity.
