As AI becomes increasingly embedded into enterprise platforms and everyday business applications, organizations face a new challenge: ensuring the data powering those systems is trusted, governed, and fit for purpose. In Part 2 of this interview series, David Tuppen, Group Chief Data Officer at Enstar Group, joins Robert Lutton, Vice President at Sandhill Consultants, to discuss what separates organizations that are ready to scale AI from those that are not.

Throughout the conversation, Tuppen argues that AI itself is no longer the differentiator. As capabilities become embedded within platforms such as data warehouses, analytics tools, and productivity applications, the focus for data leaders must shift toward governance, automation, and data quality.

Among the key themes discussed:

  • Why AI is evolving from a technology initiative into a business capability.
  • The growing importance of governing data access and ensuring trusted data is available to AI-enabled tools.
  • How reducing manual intervention and increasing automation can improve data quality and business outcomes.
  • Why organizations should prioritize simplifying processes before layering AI and agentic capabilities on top.
  • How trusted, managed data platforms help improve confidence in AI, analytics, and predictive outcomes.
  • Why AI value comes from changing how people work, reducing manual effort, and accelerating decision-making rather than scaling isolated projects.

Looking ahead, Tuppen believes data leaders should spend less time searching for the next AI solution and more time strengthening their data foundations. As AI becomes a standard feature across enterprise applications, he argues that organizations will succeed not because they have access to AI, but because they have access to high-quality data that enables AI to produce reliable and trustworthy outcomes.
