At its exclusive Roundtable Exchange at the Abe & Louie’s on March 26, CDO Magazine welcomed Boston’s top data, analytics, and AI leaders for an engaging evening of connection and collaboration on the timely topic of “Governance: From ‘Foundations’ to ‘Layering.’”

The evening was marked by dynamic, table-level conversations, with leaders exchanging perspectives and experiences on how governance is evolving in the era of GenAI. The focus was particularly on how organizations are building on existing foundations to ensure compliance while adapting to emerging agentic architectures. Executives explored defining data boundaries for autonomous agents and shared real-world use cases that delivered measurable ROI, offering a grounded reality check on impact.

CDO Magazine thanks the Co-chairs of the Boston Roundtable Exchange for their leadership:

  • Meghan Barrett Welch, Commonwealth of Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy & Environmental Affairs Chief Data Officer
  • Veronika Durgin, Saks Global VP, Data
  • Trang Nguyen, Prudential VP, Data Science
  • Colleen Tartow, Capital One Sr. Director, Enterprise Data Engineering
  • Krishna Valluru, Fidelity VP, Advanced Strategies & Research Tech

Sharing her experience, co-chair Tartow, says, “It was incredibly valuable to step away from the day-to-day and discuss shared challenges with such a high-caliber group of peers at the CDO Magazine event. The roundtable provided the perfect environment for the Boston data leadership community to connect, catching up with long-time colleagues and forging new connections with fellow leaders.

“Enabling AI within an enterprise requires constantly balancing long-term strategic architecture with the rapid integration of new technologies, and these events are a fantastic venue for pressure-testing strategies with peers in a vendor-neutral environment,” she adds.

Co-chair Nyugen outlines her key takeaways from the discussion:

  • GenAI is at an inflection point. According to most attendees, their organizations still rely on fragmented controls layered onto legacy risk frameworks. Some are shifting to enterprise-grade governance, with early risk visibility, red teaming, and FinOps discipline.
  • While agentic AI is advancing, most organizations remain at the copilot stage. More mature players are beginning to operationalize agentic patterns within governed architectures, integrating them into core business workflows. A strong data foundation is the key enabler of this transition as agentic AI relies on high-quality and well-governed data.
  • ROI remains underdeveloped. Value has largely come from productivity gains, but boards are increasingly focused on how GenAI contributes to revenue growth, margin expansion, and business unit P&L performance.
  • The priority going forward is to scale GenAI as a disciplined business capability with formal governance, cost transparency, and robust data and ROI frameworks aligned to enterprise strategy, financial outcomes, and board expectations.

Building on Nguyen’s point about scaling GenAI as a disciplined, enterprise capability, Yogesh Bhardwaj, Sensata Technologies Sr. Director, GSO Data & IT Shared Services, says, “The emergence of a multiverse of agents fundamentally changes how value is created. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is not the end business case; it is the foundational capability that enables multiple, compounding business cases—productivity, automation, decision support, and AI at scale.”

Summing up the event, Jenna George, CDO Magazine Community Director, highlights, “Boston once again brought the energy and enthusiasm! Our CDO Magazine community discussed data governance and shared case studies. The industries represented were diverse, and our leaders exchanged practical insights and walked away with actionable ideas to drive impact in their organizations.”

Special thanks to Alation, Cyera, Google Cloud, Upriver, and Collibra for making this event a success.
