Senior data, analytics and AI executives engage in roundtable discussions on “Making AI Work in the Real-World Context of Your Business” at CDO Magazine’s Boston Executive Boardroom Dinner on August 25.

CDO Magazine welcomed senior data, analytics, and AI executives to an Executive Boardroom Dinner at Mistral in Boston on August 25 for an evening centered on one question becoming increasingly important for enterprise AI leaders: What does AI need to truly work in the real world?

Hosted in partnership with 4Minds, the Executive Boardroom Dinner featured a roundtable discussion format that gave executives more time for peer exchange before sharing insights with the broader group. Conversations moved beyond AI models and data availability to the business context, governance, and human judgment that organizations rely on when putting AI into practice.

Context as the Foundation for Enterprise AI

Alok Ranjan, American Tower Director, Data Engineering, shares perspectives with his Boston peers during a roundtable discussion led by Veronika Durgin, Exemplar Luxury Group VP, Data, at CDO Magazine’s Boston Executive Boardroom Dinner on August 25.

Veronika Durgin, Exemplar Luxury Group VP, Data, reflects on what distinguished the evening’s roundtable discussions from traditional conference sessions.

“I really appreciated the format of this event. Instead of the usual panels, we spent the time in roundtable conversations. I’ve always found that the hallway conversations at conferences are often where the most interesting discussions happen, and this format enabled just that.”

She shares the difference between access to AI and the experience required to use it effectively.

“AI can make skills and knowledge much more accessible, but that isn’t the same thing as competence. And competence isn’t the same thing as wisdom. Knowing how to apply those skills, when to trust an answer, when to question it, and how to navigate ambiguity requires judgment built through lived experience.

“Even as AI becomes more sophisticated and skills become more accessible, wisdom will still be earned through experience. If anything, I think that kind of judgment may become even more important.”

Governance, Knowledge, and Enterprise Context

Cliona Molony, IDEXX Chief Data Officer, VP R&D, describes governance, context, and knowledge management as inseparable parts of enterprise AI.

“The CDO Magazine gathering did not falter in providing a reliable forum for engaging and probing conversations. This time it was on the state of enterprise knowledge management and context—as fuel for AI and driving solutions for business problems. Especially useful were conversations and insights on AI governance—where data, context and governance travel together, a business gets better insights and better outcomes.”

Table leader Cliona Molony, IDEXX Chief Data Officer, VP R&D, shares her group’s key discussion themes during the roundtable debrief.

Prem Swaroop, Dover Corporation Chief Data & AI Officer, notes that while AI capabilities continue to evolve, maintaining enterprise context is becoming an equally important challenge.

“Surrounded by peers in industrials, finance, insurance, and education sectors, it was great to exchange notes on our lived challenges and opportunities. As one of us said, it is almost a group therapy—to be among this exclusive group!

“A key takeaway for me personally was affirming the emphasis on context—including domain-specific data, algorithms, and best practices—as a key enabler for powerful AI outcomes, and how closely it needs to be curated over time due to data, model, and context drift.”

Conversations That Continued Beyond the Table

Camille Prado, CDO Magazine Global Editor, reflects on how quickly the roundtable discussions turned into candid peer-to-peer dialogue.

“What stood out most to me was how quickly the roundtables turned into candid, substantive conversations among peers—executives openly comparing experiences, challenging ideas, and learning from one another. It was wonderful to connect with some leaders for the first time alongside executives who’ve been part of our Boston community for years. The energy in the room was terrific, the conversations were real, and the exchange kept going well beyond the roundtable questions. No one seemed ready for the evening to end.”

Ed Porter, 4Minds VP of Sales, says organizations are increasingly challenged by the need to connect AI with enterprise knowledge.

“Enterprises will be navigating a patchwork of AI technologies, systems, and choices for a long time. Rather than waiting for perfect data or perfectly connected systems, the opportunity is to give AI enough institutional knowledge and context to work through the gaps.

“Just as importantly, AI needs to be able to tell us when it doesn’t know. Today, AI will often fill in the gaps with an answer that sounds right. That’s not intelligence we can trust. The goal is AI that can reason with the context it has, recognize when that context is insufficient, and tell us when it doesn’t have the answer.”
