Google Cloud has signed a five-year strategic partnership with Liberty Global to deploy Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence models and cloud technologies across Liberty Global’s European operations, the companies confirmed on 2 February.

Under the agreement, Gemini AI and other Google Cloud tools will be integrated into Liberty Global’s platforms to support new consumer offerings, including AI-driven search and content discovery on its Horizon TV service, as well as greater automation in customer service. Liberty Global serves roughly 80 million fixed and mobile connections across Europe.

“Our expanded partnership with Google Cloud represents a significant milestone for Liberty Global,” said Mike Fries, CEO of Liberty Global.

The collaboration also deepens commercial ties between the companies. Liberty Global will broaden the range of Google hardware it offers to customers, including Pixel smartphones, smartwatches, and connected home devices, through operating units such as Virgin Media O2 in the UK, Telenet in Belgium, VodafoneZiggo in the Netherlands, and Sunrise in Switzerland.

Beyond consumer services, the partners plan to work on improving network reliability and security, advancing autonomous network operations, and exploring ways for Google Cloud to use spare capacity in Liberty Global’s data centers, including facilities linked to its AtlasEdge joint venture. The companies also aim to develop cloud, cybersecurity, and AI services for small-business customers.

“Our goal is simple: to use technology to cut through complexity and bring value to our customers and partners,” said Tara Brady, president of Google Cloud for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

The deal reflects a broader trend in the telecoms industry, where operators are increasingly partnering with AI providers to reduce network costs and unlock new revenue streams, even as they continue heavy investment in fibre and 5G infrastructure.
